Have you heard about Geng Blogger (GB)? GB has become a phenomena for Malay blog especially for those that use blogger as blogging platform. GB is a social bookmarking site that is very cool for me. GB is like Digg for Malay blog. Once you registered your blog with GB, you can ping it easily.

Why I said GB is a phenomena? A few months ago I check GB Alexa rank. It ranked 200’000 and currently GB rank 50’000. GB members keep increasing.

What make GB fantastic? I like how GB integrates the Facebook application with their login form. That means you just need to login your FB in order to be login at GB. So does to register. You just need to login your FB account (from their I-Frame) and then you just need to enter a few detail to them. This method of FB login integration is very awesome. I feel secure because I don’t need to keep my username and password at GB database.

Previously, there are some Malay social bookmarking sites. However GB shows the most success in terms of members activity and members registration. This is due to their target members. Compare to previous Malay social bookmark, most of them are liked by .com bloggers. But in GB, it famous starts because of blogspot blogger. Although blogspot not so professional, but in reality there are tons of blogspot blogger compare to .com. And most of the blogspot blogger really active. That’s the factor that makes GB a phenomena.

Emm.. did I said GB is a social bookmarking site? Actually GB only support pinging service (although it looks like social bookmarking site). That means you can only ‘ping’ latest entry. I hope they can make it so that members can ‘ping’ older entry too.

How to use tables in Dreamweaver?

Tables are a great way to present tabular data or for building a nice layout of text and graphics on a web page. It gives you the possibility to create different layouts by separating the whole page in different cells, rows and columns, nesting tables into tables and much more. In Dreamweaver you don’t need to write any kind of code to insert a table, you simply select the “table” element from the “insert bar”, choose the width and height in pixels, the number of rows and columns, the width of the table border, background colour and your table is automatically inserted into the document.

How to create layouts with Div tags?

I would recommend you to use Div tags for laying out your Dreamweaver pages. The reason is that using tables sometimes results in a larger file size, and it’s not a very SEO friendly technique. Using Div tags in Dreamweaver actually gives you much more options to make your pages look great by creating styles for each Div tag. In this case all the code connected to the layout of your website is stores in an external CSS document, which makes it possible to create hundreds, even thousands of pages with the same layout by simply attaching the style sheet to them.Div tags can be used to layout your whole page but also to centre blocks ot content, create tables without using Table tags, create different colours in different areas of the document.

To insert a Div tag you need to select the Insert menu > Layout Objects > Div tag, or simple select “insert new div tag” for the insert panel of Dreamweaver.

How to create CSS styles in Dreamweaver

There are two ways to use Style in Dreamweaver. the first one is to create styles in the document, in this case they will only affect the style of one page, or to create external style sheets and attach them to one or many pages.

When using the Properties panel to format your content, Dreamweaver automatically inserts styles in the beginning of your document between the HEAD tags.

A better option is to create external Cascading Style Sheets by selecting File > New > CSS > Create from the menu panel. Then you can attach this style sheet to the document by using the “Attach Style Sheet” option from the “CSS Panel” in the “Panel Groups” on the right side of the software window. Then simply browse to locate the CSS file to attach. You can create CSS rules by selecting this option from the CSS panel. Dreamweaver automatically writes the code for you in the selected CSS file.

Anyone who is considering creating their own website will need to learn at least some basic HTML coding. There are many tools available that can help you design and create your own website, but without a good understanding of at least some basic HTML, even a basic webpage can quickly get out of hand. Understanding web page layout and the underlying HTML codes that make it work will greatly benefit you in modifying and maintaining your web pages.

So, What is HTML?

HTML stands for Hyper Text Markup Language. Simply put, it is a grouping of codes, known as Markup Tags, that are used to compose a web page. These codes instruct your web browser (Internet Explorer, Mozilla, Safari, Firefox, etc.) how to display the contents of your web page in the browser window. HTML files must have a file extension of .htm or .html to function properly, and can be created and edited with any standard text editor. Web design tools make this task easier by letting you design your page in a WYSIWYG (What You See Is What You Get) interface, while it creates and assembles the underlying HTML codes for you.

Markup Tags and Document Structure

Markup tags are simply the HTML codes that instruct your web browser how to display the contents of your web page. Tags usually come in pairs with an opening tag and a closing tag, and are enclosed with the ” < ” and ” > ” characters, called angle brackets. Closing tags also have a forward slash ” / ” preceding the tag to mark it as a closing tag. Now, let’s look at some basic tags that should be including in every web page.

Document Tags

Document tags are used to define the structure of your HTML document. There are four basic document tags described below, and they should always be included in every web page you create.

Note: For proper formatting of this article I have removed the angle brackets that surround all HTML tags. Be sure to add the angle brackets when using these tags.

html and /html

The html tag is used to tell the browser that everything between the opening html tag and the closing /html tag is an html document. Every web page should begin and end with these tags.

head and /head

HTML pages normally have a “head” and a “body.” The head will typically contain descriptive information about your web page, such as it’s title and author.

title and /title

Every HTML file should have a title enclosed in title tags. This title will usually show up on the title bar of your web browser when the page is displayed, and should include a short description of the page that is being displayed. The title tags should be included within the “head” of your HTML document.

body and /body

The body and /body tags are used to enclose the main content of your web page. This is where you will place the main content that will display in the web browser window, whether it is text, images, titles, tables, links, or whatever content you include.

HTML Elements

“HTML Elements” is another term you will hear frequently when people speak of web page design. An HTML Element simply consists of an opening tag, content, and a closing tag. For example, a body element might look like this:

What is CSS?

CSS stands for Cascading Style Sheets. CSS is a set of formatting instructions that controls the looks of a web page or pages. Some of the browsers that support CSS is: (Firefox,IE3 or later, NN4 or later). You may be saying, great this will definitely save me some time. Not so fast, you also need to know that though, the majority of the browsers understand CSS, they do not fully support all of it’s capabilities.
XHTML – XHTML is EXtensible HyperText Markup Language. XHTML Is HTML with stricter rules-that adds conformity and, is 100% XML compliant. So you should be familiar with or become more comfortable with HTML, XHTML, and the style properties of CSS.

What can you do with CSS

You can build your layout,adjusting size and color of your headings or body text, as well as positioning your pictures. This translates into like pages being programmed once, without the choice of inputting the same coding into each of your web pages manually. Translated, elimination of duplicate formatting.

How to get the Search Engines to See Your Copy

It has been said that the Search Engines still have some problems with understanding CSS. But if you want to use CSS, is there a way to get the search engines to see what you want.

1. Keep your text clean, if you have to much garbage in your web page, than the spiders will have a difficult time in determining what is relevant and what is not. Thus, CSS keeps your web page clean, without the redundant coding needed for each individual element of code. Here is an example of how to code a headline; with the CSS code below.

Example: “h1″Title”/h1″ (replace beginning and end quotes with <>)

“CSS code: H1 {font family: Arial size: 18 px; bold;}” (leave off quotes)

Syntax of CSS

First, CSS can be written within any text editor. But the text file must be saved with a CSS extension.

The syntax of CSS consists of the selector and the declaration. The selector is the identifier within the body of your web page; the declaration is the code that identifies the style that you want to put into place as to property and rule. Lets say you want all your H1 headlines to be green, with the font Arial. the code for CSS would be as follows:
Note: Do not include quotes around the code.

“selector {property: rule;}”

“H1 {color: green; font-family: Arial;}”

Note: Notice that the property and rule must be enclosed in {}.

Placement of CSS

There are three places to put your CSS code:

In the Head (Internal), in an external file, or within an individual tag (Inline style).

Internal -is used within a single web page that may have a unique style.

Inline - mixes code with content. Sometimes you may need to use it, but this style does seem to eliminate the need of even using a CSS style sheet.

External – The CSS is separate from the body of the web page and is linked with the web page. Thus, to link an external file into a web page you will need to use the link tag.
Example:
<link rel=”stylesheet” type=”text/css” href=”NameofCSS.css” />
(Goes in the head section after the title tag)

Which way do you go? If you have a large site or a site that will be expanding, an external file would be a better way to quickly and easily manipulate all your web pages at once.

Watch out for Spam

But with anything on the Internet, CSS can be used for the good and the bad. And obviously, if you want to keep your site up and running for a long time, some CSS techniques should be avoided. Why? Because some CSS techniques can be considered spam by the search engines and thus, ban your site if you use the techniques. The blackhat tactics include such things as: 1) using CSS to hide text-from headlines to body from the human eye; 2) hiding and bolding or italicizing copy for search engine spiders benefit only.

Wikipedia is one of my source of knowledges. For your information, wikipedia is not a benefit project since they provide their service for free and they never put any advertisement in their website.

Wikipedia is completely relying on donation from its precious user. If I am not mistaken, their target is USD6 million  and their current meter of donation is shown at the top bar of Wikipedia.

However, this morning I feel something weird since the donation meter is replaced with a banner saying thanks from Jimmy Wales. I guess that their mission of USD6 million is already complished.

As a part of Wikipedia user, I feel glad about this and hope that Wikipedia will go to another stage.
