One of my domain that use Co.cc services is hartaweb.co.cc. After a year, the domain couldn’t be accesed. So I opened my Co.cc account to check for error. I was surprised because I was asked to pay USD 3, USD 5, USD 7 and USD 9 to renew the domain for one, two, three or four years respectively.

Are all of of the co.cc domains need to pay the same renewal charge? Actually not, and co.cc have put it blatantly about this figure and show it in the main page. But people always not aware about it.

Co.cc only charges USD 3 for those who use this free domain service for commercial purposes, i.e. things that can bring pocket money. If you are not using this domain for advertising or paid review, then the renewal fee for that domain is still free.

However, I am quite amazed on how they can detect whether a website or blog are involved in commercial or not.

In conclusion,

4 years co dot cc = 1 year dot com.

Is it still worth to get a free co dot cc domain for a commercial purpose? Ask yourself which one suits your economic situation. For me, it’s better to get dot info (.info) domain from Godaddy. The cheapest offer for ‘dot info’ ever. We can get it for only USD 1.99 per year in certain promotion period.

In my previous entry, I explained why I was surprised on Alexa ranking method and how did they can only rank several sub domain of Blogspot precisely.  Even worse the same thing happened on co.cc.

Either co.cc or any of your registered and paid domain names, Alexa didn’t rank them properly by its subdomain, but combining all traffic received from all sub domains.

There are several co.cc weaknesses……..

1. Cannot check your sites ranking on Alexa

I am very concerned about Alexa ranking so that I can see the progress of my blog. Since I use co.cc for one of my blogs, I was unable to see the Alexa ranking for this blog. This is because of Alexa only shows co.cc ranking itself and not my blog on co.cc.

However, there are also a lot sites that is ranked normally although they use co.cc. In my opinion, Alexa needs time to index co.cc and blogspot based subdomain.

2. Co.cc domain cannot be sold

You do not have the right to sell co.cc sub domains that you use. Additionally, co.cc sub domain has no value in domaining market.

3. Co.cc server always down.

Last month, I can’t access my blog for a couple of days. What a long time to wait and it’s disgusting.

When I start blogging on co.cc, I do not really care about about point 1 and point 2. But now, I already know the importance of the first point, so I already moved the blog at co.cc domain to international ‘dot com’ domain.
